As conversations about racial inequality grew in 2020, many consumers dedicated themselves to getting more educated on terms like diversity, what it means to be anti-racist and actionable topics like how to support black businesses. Per a release at the time from Google, there was such a surge in online searches for Black businesses in 2020 that the search engine giant decided to offer a tool — a badge that Black-owned businesses can add to their website to denote their diversity — to make the search easier.

It seems all that education and support has helped as studies from companies like Merchant Maverick, a small business financial review service, show that the rate of Black-owned businesses increased from early 2020 — almost 40 percent per Merchant Maverick’s findings between February 2020 and August 2021. To keep the conversation and increased momentum going, we’ve rounded up a few of our editors’ favorite Black-owned businesses and Black-made gifts from across a variety of product categories.

Black-owned lifestyle brand Côtier, founded by Marx and Amber Succès, is committed to making moments and celebrations more memorable and remarkable by sparking meaningful conversation and connection through fun. Candles like the brand’s bestselling Dandelion Flower Top candles are hand poured and feature flower-shaped, hand-dyed wax toppers. Multifaceted.

Creative studio and stationery brand Creative Pounds was founded in 2017 by illustrator LaTanja Jones Snelling as an event signage business. The brand became what it is today in 2019 after Snelling began selling pins for her daughter, Logyn, who was dealing with chronic illnesses. The response was so positive that the Creative Pounds never stopped, and Snelling began selling a variety of stationery items and art prints that “depict the everyday joy and culture of Black people,” per her description. Stickers like Creative Pounds’ Protect Black Women Sticker have been bestsellers since their first introduction. Creative Pounds.
